Big Changes For Collectible Barbie Dolls by Hillary Lacida
After its tremendous launch in 1959, more and more people continued to collect Barbie dolls because of its potential future value. From young girls, teenagers up to older women who were fond of collecting dolls-especially vintage dolls-Barbie has become quite a commodity. Being one of the most sought-after products in the world of doll industry, a Barbie doll has definitely a great potential because of its increasing value.
Barbie doll collecting has been around for quite a while time and has accomplished many things. She has been everything from a fashion model to an astronaut. It is safe to say that Barbie is so popular that almost every little girl owns at least one. But Barbie is not just for little girls, she is a highly collectible doll. There are Barbies made for play and there are Barbies made for collectors.
Did you realize that Barbie dolls are not just the favourite toy of little girls? Mattel estimates that there are over 100,000 adult collectors of Barbie dolls. Ninety percent of these collectors are women who are, on average around the age 40, and purchase at least 20 Barbie dolls a year. Almost half of Barbie collectors each spend over $1000 a year.Mattel in recent years has been catering to this niche market. They have produced a range of collectible Barbie dolls with the aim of encouraging collectors to increase their collections in line with their individual tastes and interests.
The four colors in the collectible tier system.
1) Labeled as Pink dolls
2) Labeled as Silver dolls
3) Gold Label dolls
4) Labeled as Platinum dolls
Different labels with its own different meaning. Let’s have the Pink label collectible dolls. “Barbie Collector Pink Label Wizard of Oz Dorothy Barbie Doll” is one example of this tier. These dolls where produced in no limits, you they can even produced as many as they can. Some of this were ‘The Dolls of the World’ series, ‘Model Barbie’ and lots more. Most of the dolls in pink labels are usually called “Barbie dolls” but there were some which were not. It also has a distinctive packaging or box, box trimmed in pink and a clear front cover.
Followed by the Silver Tier tier which includes the Birthday Wishes dolls. Each doll is limited to no more than 50,000 pieces created worldwide, and comes packaged in a silver-trimmed “reveal” package, known as a “new version of the “cake box package,” which features a closed box with a beautiful doll photo or other artwork on the cover. Remove the lid to reveal the doll, protected behind a layer of acetate. Just slide the top portion of the lid onto the packaging back to create an easel-type display, ideal for NRFB collectors.”
Next to silver is the gold label dolls, the production limit for these is only 25,000. The box has artwork and photography on the back and lid with gold decorative trimming. Some of these were, ‘Designer Bride’, Vintage Repros’ and lots more.
Lastly is the platinum label dolls, the production of these dolls were of less than 1000. An example of a Platinum Label collectible doll is the ‘White Chocolate Obsession(TM) Barbie Doll!’ These dolls are exclusive to one retail store only.
All Mattel authorized specialty retailers will have the opportunity to carry the full range of dolls from Pink to Gold. The transition from Collctor and Limited editions to the new colored tier will transition slowly throughout 2004. By 2005, all dolls will be classifed using the Silver Tier, Gold Tier, Platinum Tier, Pink Tier designations.
