Astronaut Training And Selection

IB Extended Essay?

Do you think that this is a good topic to write about?

The role of psychology in the selection and training of astronauts.

My vp helped me to come up with this topic because I wanted to do space and psychology. It is a combination, two in one. Do you think that it is good?

Thank you. It is a 1500-2000 word essay. I am in Grade 10.

It sounds good I think, and interesting. I’m also an IB student. I have not written a EE yet but I am going to. In psychology as well. Good Luck!

The Astronaut Farmer – Widescreen Fullscreen Dubbed

An aspiring astronaut who was forced to forsake his dream of exploring space in order to save the family farm begins building his own personal rocket as a means of reaching the stars in this quirky rural drama starring Billy Bob Thornton. There once was a time when Charlie Farmer (Thornton) seemed like a shoo-in for NASA’s esteemed astronaut training program. An Air Force pilot who held a degree in aerospace engineering, Charlie was well on his way to blasting off when a family crisis grounded his celestial aspirations. Of course, Charlie’s feet may be firmly planted on terra firma these days, but his thoughts are constantly ascending into the clouds and beyond. It’s been ten long years since the man who would navigate the stars began tending to the family farm, and during that time, Charlie has dedicated every moment of his spare time to building the rocket that will one day launch him into space. Though his devoted wife, Audie (Virginia Madsen), the pair’s three children, Sunshine, Stanley, and Shepard, and even his father-in-law, Hal (Bruce Dern), all support Charlie in achieving his lifelong goal of becoming the nation’s first independent astronaut, a last-minute hitch on the eve before the big launch unexpectedly stalls Charlie’s countdown. It seems that Charlie’s quest to obtain a substantial amount of high-grade rocket fuel has attracted the attention of not only the FBI, but the CIA, the FAA, and the United States military as well. Now, as the powers that be attempt to ground Charlie, citing concerns for civilian safety, a media frenzy descends upon the once-quiet farm as the reluctant renegade hero vows to show his children just how far one’s courage and willingness to pursue one’s own ideals can get a person when one refuses to give up hope. Northfork writing/directing duo Mark and Michael Polish team up to tell the tale of a man considered an oddity by his neighbors, a criminal by the government, and an inspiration by the media and the people. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Getting Off the Planet: Training Astronauts

Getting Off the Planet: Training Astronauts

$18.95

Getting off the Planet is the story of how a group of dedicated scientists, working with some of the nation’s finest pilots, prepared for space flight by meticulous research and patient, relentless testing. The book provides a piece of space history largely missing until now. Earlier explorers, whatever the hazards, could count on having Earth’s amenities: food, drinking water, breathing air and gravity.Space explorers had to take their life-support equipment with them. They also had to understand and solve the problems of such a mysterious, dangerous place before anyone had ever visited the space environment. For the first time ever, Dr. Randall M. Chambers , space pioneer who designed and conducted many of the earliest astronaut research and training programs, takes the reader behind the scenes and describes significant space flight preparations.Co-author is Mary Jane Chambers , the scientist’s wife, who has had a long career as a journalist. When they met as students at Indiana University in 1949, Mary Jane was eyeing a career as a foreign correspondent. Instead, she soon found herself a front row seat at a drama about a different kind of foreign place: outer space.Mrs. chambers has doggedly insisted that Getting off the Planet be enjoyable, interesting reading for space fans in all stages of scientific knowledge. She has banished the scientist’s usual props: formulas and footnotes and has instead “translated” science projects into understandable language.Together, the authors have also recollected some humorous anecdotes which inevitably occurred during research and training projects. The book is richly illustrated with pictures of astronauts, test pilots, scientists and engineering technologists in experimental projects rarely seen before.
