Celebrating 50 Years of Americans in Space Commemorative Patch

Celebrating 50 Years of Americans in Space Commemorative Patch

$7.95

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF AMERICANS IN SPACE This is a new patch designed by Tim Gagnon. It honors and celebrates America’s achievements in space. In 1961 two countries began what came to be known as the Space Race – the USSR and the USA. Its goal was to showcase to the world the technical prowess of each country. On May 25, 1961 the American President challenged his nation to ?land a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth.? That goal was met on July 24, 1969. The knowledge gained from that achievement led to learning howto “live and work in space” towards the goal of returning to the Moon to stay and one day explore the surface of Mars. The central elements are representations of our past and current achievements. The US Flag on the surface of the Moon and the International Space Station in orbit above the Earth. The Astronaut Symbol, representing every American who has flown in space connects the two achievements. The emblems of every past manned space program from Project Mercury to the Space Shuttle surround the center paying tribute to the men and women who made those programs possible and a success. The seven star constellation “Aquila.” which means “Eagle” honor the original seven astronauts as well as the final crews of Challenger and Columbia. The three stars together in the upper left honor the crew of Apollo 1.

The Space Shuttle: Celebrating Thirty Years of NASA’s First Space Plane [Hardcover] Author: Piers Bizony Bookviews by Alan Caruba”…a classic coffee table book, 10.5 x 11.25, 300 pages and filled with 900 color photos. In short, the perfect Christmas gift for someone who is an enthusiast for life and travel in outer space. In the 1980s, on assignment, I had the opportunity to visit the John F. Kennedy Space Center and tour the site where rockets and space shuttles were launched. I saw a shuttle up close and that is to say I saw a vehicle that was the size of a small building and marveled that it could be lifted beyond Earth?s gravity to circle the planet. One can only marvel at the courage of the crews that went aloft and the scientific and technological mastery that made it possible. This book is a keeper!” This superbly designed and lavishly illustrated book marks a special moment in history: the final mission of the space shuttle. Noted space and science author Piers Bizony has put together a retrospective that covers the entire space shuttle program. In addition to covering every space shuttle mission, the book also covers the development and design of the space shuttle, as well as the technical specifications of the vehicle and details of its major assemblies and subassemblies. A full double-gatefold provides a large-scale technical drawing of the space shuttle. Features: Hardcover: 300 pages Publisher: Zenith Press; First edition (October 2, 2011) Language: English Book Dimensions: 11.2 x 10.5 x 1.3 inches

Space Shuttle Challenger Acrylic with Flown Artifact

Space Shuttle Challenger Acrylic with Flown Artifact

Space Shuttle Challenger Acrylic with Flown Artifact These are the first official Space Shuttle custom-designed and professionally produced acrylics :Made out of the most advanced acrylic available on the market today – Plexid 55 – these are ultraclear with no discoloration over time. Unlike other privately made acrylics these are real blocks, not cheaply glued or screwed together. Each block is in the size of 3”x4′ and about 1” thick.Perfect for any office table or even flat down in a cabinet! This acrylic contains a flown piece of flown AFRSI (Advanced Flexible Reusable surface insulation blanket) on STS-41 G and removed after the flight. (NOT from the ill-fated flight STS-51-L, but removed before).Any items from the Space Shuttle Challenger are incredibly rare as they were all secured after the explosion of the orbiter and little was released before such as this blanket. The AFRSI blanket is used instead of heatshield tiles as it is more flexible as the name says.A flown larger piece of Challenger has sold at over $8000 in a LunarLegacies auction last year.Comes with a certificate of authenticity and copies of the original NASA papers. Thagard, Mission Specialist Launch – June 18, 1983 at 7:33:00 a.m. EDT Landing – June 24, 1983, 6:56:59 a.m. PDT Sally K. Ride became first American woman to fly in space. Two communications satellites deployed, ANIK C-2 for TELESAT Canada and PALAPA-B1 for Indonesia, both attached to Payload Assist Module-D (PAM-D) motors. Seven Get Away Special canisters in cargo bay held variety of experiments including ones studying effects of space on social behavior of ant colony in zero gravity. Ten experiments mounted on Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS-01) performed research in forming metal alloys in microgravity and use of remote sensing scanner. Orbiter’s small control rockets fired while SPAS-01 held by remote manipulator system to test movement on extended arm. Experiments to investigate space sickness carried out. Other payloads: Office of Space and Terrestrial Applications-2 (OSTA-2); Continuous Flow Electrophoresis System (CFES); Monodisperse Latex Reactor (MLR); and one Shuttle Student Involvement (SSIP) experiment. Sally Ride was born on May 26, 1951 in Los Angeles, California. As a young girl, she wanted to become a professional tennis player and, at one time, was a ranked player on the junior tennis circuit. She attended Stanford University where she earned four degrees: Bachelor of Arts in English, Bachelor of Science in Physics, Masters in Physics and a Ph.D. in Physics. Dr. Ride applied to the astronaut program after reading an ad in a newspaper. More than 8,000 men and women applied to the space program that year. Of the 35 individuals accepted, six were women. One was Sally Ride. She was accepted into the astronaut corps in 1978 and completed her training as a mission specialist in 1979. On June 18,1983 she became the first American woman to orbit Earth when she flew aboard Space Shuttle Challenger. Her second flight was also aboard Challenger in 1984. Dr. Ride was a member of the team chosen to investigate the explosion of Challenger in 1986. She left the astronaut corps in 1987.
