Atlas: The Ultimate Weapon

Atlas: The Ultimate Weapon

$29.95

Atlas : The Ultimate Weapon by Those Who Built It This is the astonishing story of how a group of young engineers were asked, not to just build a rocket and launch it into space, something which was difficult enough in the 1950′s, but to build and deploy hundreds of them, in a variety of different climates, with nothing less than the safety of the ‘free’ world at stake. In an era of global tensions, this tenacious group created the workhorse of America’s military defenses and of its space program. The insider’s story of the Atlas rocket, America’s first intercontinental ballistic missile, is offered in this careful history of the rocket in its roles as both a civilian and a military vehicle. Written by the manager of program control for the Atlas project, this tell-all includes intimate details of the rocket, including its origins as the MX-774 prototype missile, the difficult development and deployment of its nuclear payload, the activation and deactivation of the Atlas rocket as part of the Strategic Air Command squadrons, and a host of previously unpublished pictures. The missile’s development as a civilian rocket is also documented, including details on its role in the Project Mercury manned spaceflights and its use today as the high-performance Centaur and Agena rocket stages used for satellite and space probe launches.Appendixes of the Atlas flight history, a detailed key of program events and milestones, and biographies of prominent Atlas managers are also included. Apollo 7: The NASA Mission Reports

$18.95

Apollo 7: The NASA Mission Reports October 1968 and the United States manned space program was about to be reborn. An entirely new space vehicle awaited its pilots at Pad 34. After 21 months the three-man Apollo space capsule had undergone a transformation. Over 1300 modifications had been made to the spacecraft following the tragic fire which had claimed the lives of the Apollo 1 crew. Now the three men who had lost their friends on that ill-fated mission were faced with the task of flying an all-new space vehicle. It was to be the first manned flight of America’s lunar spacecraft and it was to the be first manned launch of Wernher von Braun’s giant Saturn IB rocket. The prestigious task of commanding the first Apollo mission was given to CaptainWalter M. Schirra, a veteran of America’s Gemini and Mercury programs. Accompanying him were Command Module Pilot, Major Donn Eisele, and physicist-civilian, Walter Cunningham ? both were taking their first ride into space. Schirra, Eisele and Cunningham would be the first men to ride on a Saturn rocket and were then expected to fly the new spacecraft for the full length of a lunar mission. Every single onboard system would have to be tested and studied. Apollo 7 would be the longest first flight of any spacecraft or aircraft in the history of aviation. Incredibly, within nine months of this first manned Apollo mission, two Americans would fly the hardware to the Sea Of Tranquility. This book includes the Apollo 7 Press kit, the Pre-launch Mission Operation Report, the Post-launch Mission Operation Report and the Crew Technical Debriefing. Creating Space The Story of the Space Age Told Through ModelsThe Heavens – and trying to get there – have always intrigued man, and have been included in our artwork throughout all of history. In recent years they have been the subject of countless books, articles, radio and television shows and films, and have more and more featured the practical method of achieving these dreams – Spaceships. Creating Space takes us on a journey through the history of the space age, up to the present and beyond. From the advent of the “space race” with the V-2 rocket of World War II to the International Space Station and the future, a complete and detailed chronicling of vehicles is given, side by side with pictures and details of models that depict the multitude of aircraft and spacecraft developed throughout the world. In addition, extensive appendices provide details of all of the space-related models ever made and the many manufacturers and distributors who have supplied them – all in the words of an experienced professional insider. Mat Irvine worked in the BBC Visual Effects Department for 20 years, contributing to many projects including Doctor Who, Blake’s 7, Edge of Darkness, the various NASA flights, and many science and space-oriented documentaries and programs. Creating Space is presented in 12 chapters which logically group together the history, the vehicles and the models into logical and meaningful categories. Questions the space agencies are too embarrassed to discuss ? such as Has anyone “done it” in space? What will happen to the first baby conceived in space? and Have astronauts and cosmonauts practiced “docking maneuvers” while in orbit? ? are thoughtfully answered, while science-fiction myths about interstellar intercourse are dispelled. Even their teacher wants a copy! Informative, easy to read without being childish – fantastic! – H.S. Markham The most fascinating thing about this book and, indeed, this series of books from Apogee, is there access to NASA’s records. Deep space is an endlessly interesting subject; and this particular book is quite well done. Whitfield knew what to put in and what to leave out in order to maintain the flow. – F.
