Commercial Space Travel Vehicles
Commercial Space Travel Vehicles

A Backhoe weighting 8 tons is on top of a flat-bed trailer and heading west on a highway / roadway.?
The extended shovel arm is made of hardened refined steel and the approaching overpass is made of commercial-grade concrete, reinforced with 1 1/2 inch steel rebar spaced at 6 inch intervals in a crisscross pattern layered at 1 foot spacing. Solve: When the shovel arm strikes the overpass, what is the velocity of the vehicle (how fast is it travelling) to slice the bridge in half? (Assume no effect for headwind and no braking by the driver.) Extra Credit: Solve for the time and distance required for the entire rig to come to a complete stop after hitting the overpass at the speed calculated above.
as a truck driver i can assure you that this is impossible as there is not a truck that can move the trailer fast enough to completely sever the overpass as the tires would first fail, then the trailer would break apart. the stop would be in less than 8 seconds as the baskhoe would then be blocking the traffic flow west bound underneath the overpass.

Now, as we hover on the threshold of commercial spaceflight, authors Chris Dubbs and Emeline Paat-Dahlstrom look back at how we got to this point.Their book traces the lives of the individuals who shared the dream that private individuals and private enterprise belong in space. 1/400 Delta II Rocket w/Launch pad $44.95 1/400 Delta II Rocket w/Launch pad New from Dragon Models – April 2011 The USA planned to phase out all expendable launch vehicles (ELV) after the Space Shuttle entered service. However, the Challenger accident of 1986 changed all that, and the Delta program was restarted. Termed Delta II, these rockets have made nearly 150 successful launches since 1989, making it the most reliable system in service. Originally built by McDonnell Douglas, production for both US government and commercial entities is now the responsibility of United Launch Alliance (ULA).As an ELV, each rocket can only be launched once. A Delta II rocket consists of Stage I tanks, solid rocket boosters, interstage, Stage II tanks, optional Stage III rocket motor, and finally the payload fairing (nose cone). Among the Delta II?s missions are the launching of GPS Block II satellites, Iridium satellites, and several Mars missions for NASA. The latter includes the Mars Phoenix lander in 2007. The future of the Delta II space rocket is uncertain beyond 2011 once the Medium Launch Vehicle 3 contract with the US Air Force expires, but despite this it has proved a hugely successful design to date. Features: Highly detailed model True to 1/400 High quality diecast construction |

Gemini Spacecraft Replica $259 Gemini Spacecraft 1/48 Scale Replica Project Gemini was the second human spaceflight program of the United States of America. It operated between Projects Mercury and Apollo, during the years 1963-1966. Its objective was to develop techniques for advanced space travel, notably those necessary for Project Apollo, whose objective was to land men on the Moon. Gemini missions involved extravehicular activity and orbital maneuvers including rendezvous and docking. The Gemini Program was conceived after it became evident to NASA officials that an intermediate step was required between the projects Mercury and Apollo. The major objectives assigned to Gemini were: To subject two men and supporting equipment to long-duration flights, a requirement for projected later trips to the Moon or deeper space. To effect rendezvous and docking with other orbiting vehicles, and to maneuver the docked vehicles in space, using the propulsion system of the target vehicle for such maneuvers. To perfect methods of reentry and landing the spacecraft at a pre-selected land-landing point. To gain additional information concerning the effects of weightlessness on crew members and to record the physiological reactions of crew members during long-duration flights. After 10 successful flights, the Gemini program clearly placed the United States in the lead over the Soviet Union in manned spaceflight. The flight of Gemini VIII included the successful emergency recovery of the tumbling orbiting capsule by Neil ArmstrongThis Gemini Spacecraft 1/48 Scale Replica is by expert modeler Nick Proach. Creating Space $30.95 Creating Space The Story of the Space Age Told Through ModelsThe Heavens – and trying to get there – have always intrigued man, and have been included in our artwork throughout all of history. In recent years they have been the subject of countless books, articles, radio and television shows and films, and have more and more featured the practical method of achieving these dreams – Spaceships. Creating Space takes us on a journey through the history of the space age, up to the present and beyond. From the advent of the “space race” with the V-2 rocket of World War II to the International Space Station and the future, a complete and detailed chronicling of vehicles is given, side by side with pictures and details of models that depict the multitude of aircraft and spacecraft developed throughout the world. In addition, extensive appendices provide details of all of the space-related models ever made and the many manufacturers and distributors who have supplied them – all in the words of an experienced professional insider. Mat Irvine worked in the BBC Visual Effects Department for 20 years, contributing to many projects including Doctor Who, Blake’s 7, Edge of Darkness, the various NASA flights, and many science and space-oriented documentaries and programs. Creating Space is presented in 12 chapters which logically group together the history, the vehicles and the models into logical and meaningful categories. This book will be equally valuable to space enthusiasts, modellers, and space historians. |
