Current Space Science Missions
Is the U.S. space program going to be over soon?

The way I’m hearing people talking about the U.S. space program, it seems like when they complete their current missions it’s going to be completely over. I don’t buy this. Can someone please clarify? I’m interested to know what plans are being discussed for future space exploration.

And just for your enjoyment, the new Symphony of Science video :D

I think they are reorganizing what nasa will do and not do. nasa will still be doing space exploration, and the space centre will still be there, but more of the space exploration will be done by private industry, and nasa will be more of a broker, that is a person who might bring people together to get a job done, or sell products to get a job done. I am not quite sure, but i do know that nasa is going to have a new space ship to replace the shuttle, and i am not sure how much the new space ship will be working with the same missions as the current space shuttles have. I am pretty sure russia will be doing a lot of the shuttles work when the shuttle is retired.

IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON - AUTOGRAPHED by Francis French & Colin Burgess

IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON – AUTOGRAPHED by Francis French & Colin Burgess

$30.95

IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON – AUTOGRAPHED by Francis French & Colin Burgess This book has been signed by both authors – Francis French and Colin Burgess Outward Odyssey: A People’s History of Spaceflight SeriesRead an Excerpt (pdf)Digital Media Kit (pdf)In the Shadow of the Moon tells the story of the most exciting and challenging years in spaceflight, with two superpowers engaged in a titanic struggle to land one of their own people on the moon. While describing awe-inspiring technical achievements, the authors go beyond the missions and the competition of the space race to focus on the people who made it all possible. Their book explores the inspirations, ambitions, personalities, and experiences of the select few whose driving ambition was to fly to the moon.Drawing on interviews with astronauts, cosmonauts, their families, technicians, and scientists, as well as rarely seen Soviet and American government documents, the authors craft a remarkable story of the golden age of spaceflight as both an intimate human experience and a rollicking global adventure. From the Gemini flights to the Soyuz space program to the earliest Apollo missions, including the legendary first moon landing, their book draws a richly detailed picture of the space race as an endeavor equally endowed with personal meaning and political significance.Francis French is the former director of events for Sally Ride Science, and the current director of education at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. Colin Burgess is a former flight service director with Qantas Airways and the author of many books on spaceflight, including Fallen Astronauts: Heroes Who Died Reaching for the Moon, available in a Bison Books edition. He is the coauthor with Francis French of Into That Silent Sea: Trailblazers of the Space Era, 1961?1965 (Nebraska 2007). A NASA astronaut from 1963 to 1971, Walter Cunningham was a crew member on the first manned Apollo flight.

NOVA - MARS, DEAD OR ALIVE

NOVA – MARS, DEAD OR ALIVE

$19.95

The great PBS science series Nova scores another hit with Mars: Dead or Alive, capturing all the excitement surrounding the Mars rover landings of early 2004. Originally broadcast just as the first of the twin rovers (“Spirit” and “Opportunity”) was experiencing temporary communication problems with Earth-bound mission controllers, this riveting hour-long episode chronicles the risky $820 million Mars Exploration Rover (MER) project from design to touchdown, dramatically illustrating (through the use of detailed simulations and sophisticated computer animation) the considerable chances of failure–a nail-biting gamble considering that fully two-thirds of all previous Mars missions never reached their destination. Through rigorous testing and initial failure of the MER parachute system to the celebrated transmission of pristine photos from the “Spirit” landing site, we see just how intensely complex and emotionally involving the missions are, especially for Cornell University astronomer and lead MER scientist Steve Squyres and his devoted team of colleagues at Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Careers are on the line as technical problems accumulate, and one feels the same mixture of dread, anxiety, and elation that accompanied the historic return of Apollo 13. A bonus interview with Mars-mission pioneer Donna Shirley puts everything into resonant perspective, celebrating science and the MER missions as an essential human endeavor. As with all Nova programs, the DVD includes a generous variety of study materials including an interview with Squyres, a detailed look at the anatomy of the Mars rovers, links to a companion website, and a “math activity” feature allowing viewers to understand the aerodynamic variables of parachute design. If you’re among those who feel that NASA and MER tax dollars are wasted, this DVD will probably change your opinion. –Jeff Shannon Special DVD features include: bonus video segment featuring Donna Shirley of NASA Interview with Steve Squyres Anatamony of a Rover activity Materials and activities for educators A link to the NOVA Web site Scene selections; closed captions; and described video for the visually impaired Actors: Stacy Keach, Peter Thomas, Don Wescott Format: Closed-captioned, Color, Letterboxed, NTSC Language: English Region: Region 1 (U.S. and Canada only. Getting Off the Planet: Training Astronauts

Getting Off the Planet: Training Astronauts

$18.95

Getting off the Planet is the story of how a group of dedicated scientists, working with some of the nation’s finest pilots, prepared for space flight by meticulous research and patient, relentless testing. The book provides a piece of space history largely missing until now. Earlier explorers, whatever the hazards, could count on having Earth’s amenities: food, drinking water, breathing air and gravity.Space explorers had to take their life-support equipment with them. They also had to understand and solve the problems of such a mysterious, dangerous place before anyone had ever visited the space environment. For the first time ever, Dr. Randall M. Chambers , space pioneer who designed and conducted many of the earliest astronaut research and training programs, takes the reader behind the scenes and describes significant space flight preparations.Co-author is Mary Jane Chambers , the scientist’s wife, who has had a long career as a journalist. When they met as students at Indiana University in 1949, Mary Jane was eyeing a career as a foreign correspondent. Instead, she soon found herself a front row seat at a drama about a different kind of foreign place: outer space.Mrs. chambers has doggedly insisted that Getting off the Planet be enjoyable, interesting reading for space fans in all stages of scientific knowledge. She has banished the scientist’s usual props: formulas and footnotes and has instead “translated” science projects into understandable language.Together, the authors have also recollected some humorous anecdotes which inevitably occurred during research and training projects. The book is richly illustrated with pictures of astronauts, test pilots, scientists and engineering technologists in experimental projects rarely seen before. Features / Reviews: Table of Contents Chapter 1: From the Beginning Chapter 2: Getting Started Chapter 3: Some Glimpses into Early Space Research Projects Chapter 4: The Biosatellite Pioneers Chapter 5: Astronaut Selection and Training?with Stress, Distress, Zeal and Determination Chapter 6: Acceleration Forces and Stresses: Coping with Gravity Chapter 7: Early Mars Experiments Chapter 8: Microgravity and Weightless Simulations Chapter 9: Atmospheric Pressure Factors Chapter 10: More Glimpses into Early Space Research Projects Chapter 11: All Dressed Up for Space Exploration Chapter 12: So Much for Creature Comforts Chapter 13: Into Space with Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Chapter 14: Exploring the Moon and Returning to Earth Chapter 15: The Shuttle Programs: New Spacecraft, New Missions Chapter 16: Preparing for Sky Lab and Other Space Stations Chapter 17: Meeting the Public Chapter 18: Serendipities Galore!
