The New Science of Agrivoltaics by Premier Solar
There is concern about the growing economy of solar harvesting as it may impact on food production because of the conversion of agricultural lands into solar PV farms. In the recent World Congress on Conservation Agriculture held in Brisbane, French scientist Christian Dupraz introduced the idea of Agrivoltaics as solution in the possible food and energy conflict.
The science of Agrivoltaics aims to maximise a piece of land by combining solar harvesting and crop growing, much like the science that applies in Agroforestry. The revolutionary discipline will reduce the need for farm land conversion, instead growing the use of a piece of land can supply. Since both crops and solar farms are dependent on solar radiation they are naturally complimentary.
In France, researchers have been working over the past 15 years to successfully integrate food plantation and energy harvesting. After many trials under variable circumstances Dr. Christian Dupraz and his team has finally came to conclusion that solar energy is the best option to integrate with the food industry. The solar energy production would come from using thin lines of solar photovoltaic panels.
In Australia, plans for several large scale solar power projects are already underway in isolated desert regions which aren’t suitable for crops. However there is a growing thought that mid-scale projects built closer to areas of large populations may be more feasible long term, In this case the idea of Agrivoltaics would help to add to the economic viability of these. Certainly in land poor countries the idea is very valid and further strengthens the large scale viability of solar power production without putting any valuable farm land at stake.
And it is a win-win scenario; if the idea shows relatively high success rate then it will also help farmers in the often struggling agricultural sector to invest heavily on solar power without compromising any land space for crop growing. In Australia the incoming carbon tax is seeing the high emission production from agriculture already on the governments list of high priority industries, so Agrivoltaics in some form may be one viable solution.
Anything that can both successfully offset carbon in the agricultural sector and also allow farmers to have another much more dependable source of income would have to be considered favourably. It will simply require a national government scheme that will let farmers sell the generated electricity from their systems at a fair price.
Fairly, the new branch of science will innovate the use of solar power in Australia not only for the agricultural sector but will also pave way for ideas across industries urging and inspiring every sector to adopt the technology once the benefits surface.
