Are NASA advisers being silenced?
Has anyone heard about the three NASA advisors who resigned, one voluntarily and two more who were *asked* to? I’ve only seen it mentioned in the Cape Canaveral News. The advisors wanted more money spent on NASA’s science budget, rather than finishing the international space station and going back to the moon. What’s so important about the moon, where we’ve already been, and why would advisors be asked to *step down* for suggesting the money be spent differently? Isn’t that thier JOB, as advisers? Does this request qualify as limiting freedom of speech?
I do not know whether NASA advisers are being silenced. However, In 2003 Luan Enjie of China National Space Agency announced China’s ambitions for a space program that would focus on mining Helium 3 from the moon. This year China launched a manned space flight. Next year they will put a robot lander on the moon. Helium 3 will be the next energy resource. It will be used in fusion reactors. We compete with China and India for oil reserves. Since the US does not have any program to mine lunar Helium 3 resources, we will not be in competition with China. We will still be using coal.
Japan, India, Europe and the US all have plans for a moonbase and mining of Helium 3 but China will be there first. China is probably way ahead in fusion technology. China will not go to war with the US except in an economic way.
Remember the Golden Rule:
He who has the gold, makes the rules
So when China has the Gold of the next century, Helium 3, they will be making the rules.
If you study the game of Go (more difficult than chess) you will see a strategy of waiting until the very end to surround your opponent and take all his stones. The Chinese are very patient.
In Beijing, China on July 23-27, 2006 the 8th ILEWG Conference on Exploration and Utilization of the Moon was held. According to
http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=20503
Within the next two years, four independent spacecraft (SELENE, Chang’E 1, Chandrayaan 1 and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter) will orbit the Moon carrying an extensive array of sophisticated science and exploration instruments.
The Beijing Declaration states that the importance of protecting the Moon becomes more urgent than ever before, as we enter a decade with many planned lunar exploration missions, including orbiters, impactors, penetrators and landers. I am curious about the legal issue of mineral rights on the moon.
China plans to land a robotic rover on the moon next year according to some reports and within two years according to others. China now receives about one fourth of the output of OPEC oil. Helium 3 as an energy resource for fusion reactors is theoretically very attractive.
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/helium3_000630.html
Researchers and space enthusiasts see helium 3 as the perfect fuel source: extremely potent, nonpolluting, with virtually no radioactive by-product. Proponents claim its the fuel ofthe 21st century. The trouble is, hardly any of it is found on Earth But there is plenty of it on the moon. Society is straining to keep pace with energy demands, expected to increase eightfold by 2050 as the world population swells toward 12 billion. The moon just may be the answer. “Helium 3 fusion energy may be thekey to future space exploration and settlement,” said Gerald Kulcinski,Director of the Fusion Technology Institute (FTI) at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Scientists estimate there are about 1 million tons of helium 3 on the moon, enough to power the world for thousands of years. The equivalent of a single space shuttle load or roughly 25 tons could supply the entire United States’ energy needs for a year, accordingto Apollo17 astronaut and FTI researcher Harrison Schmitt.

The Space Shuttle: Celebrating Thirty Years of NASA’s First Space Plane [Hardcover] $39.95 The Space Shuttle: Celebrating Thirty Years of NASA’s First Space Plane [Hardcover] Author: Piers Bizony Bookviews by Alan Caruba”…a classic coffee table book, 10.5 x 11.25, 300 pages and filled with 900 color photos. In short, the perfect Christmas gift for someone who is an enthusiast for life and travel in outer space. In the 1980s, on assignment, I had the opportunity to visit the John F. Kennedy Space Center and tour the site where rockets and space shuttles were launched. I saw a shuttle up close and that is to say I saw a vehicle that was the size of a small building and marveled that it could be lifted beyond Earth?s gravity to circle the planet. One can only marvel at the courage of the crews that went aloft and the scientific and technological mastery that made it possible. This book is a keeper!” This superbly designed and lavishly illustrated book marks a special moment in history: the final mission of the space shuttle. Noted space and science author Piers Bizony has put together a retrospective that covers the entire space shuttle program. In addition to covering every space shuttle mission, the book also covers the development and design of the space shuttle, as well as the technical specifications of the vehicle and details of its major assemblies and subassemblies. A full double-gatefold provides a large-scale technical drawing of the space shuttle. Apollo 12: The NASA Mission Reports $18.95 Apollo 12: The NASA Mission Reports Apollo 12 The NASA Mission Reports comes with a bonus Windows CDROM featuring an exclusive 30th anniversary interview with Command Module Pilot Captain Richard “Dick” Gordon ? the movie “Pinpoint For Science” ? the full EVA television record ? the in flight press conference ? over 2100 still photographs and five Quicktime panoramas of the Ocean Of Storms. When the crew of Apollo 11 returned to Earth in July 1969 they brought with them a wealth of new information about the moon. Now astronauts Charles (Pete) Conrad, Alan Bean and Richard Gordon would return to the moon and build on that knowledge. The real test for the crew of Apollo 12 was not to see if they could get to the moon, but to see if they could get to an exact place on the moon. Their target was in an area known as the Ocean Of Storms. On November 14 1969 the crew of Apollo 12 blasted off to their place in history. Not only would Conrad and Bean become the third and fourth men to walk on the moon but they would land the lunar module Intrepid within 600 feet of their designated target. Waiting for them was the unmanned space probe Surveyor 3 which had soft-landed in April 1967. The flight of Apollo 12, which began almost catastrophically when the huge Saturn V was struck by lightning just moments after lift off, went on to yield an enormous amount of valuable data collected during over seven and a half hours on the lunar surface. On their return home the crew of Apollo 12 became the first humans to witness an eclipse of the Sun by the Earth. In Apollo 12 The NASA Mission Reports some of the rare official documentation of the voyage of Apollo 12 is collected and made commercially available for the first time. Gemini 12: The NASA Mission Reports $19.95 Gemini 12: The NASA Mission Reports The last Gemini flight would be flown by veteran Commander James Lovell and a brilliant rookie called Edwin ?Buzz? Aldrin. Lovell?s experience gained on Gemini 6 would prove the perfect foundation on which the newcomer Aldrin would be able to build a near-perfect science mission. The task of space-walking had proven arduous and dangerous on previous Gemini flights but after months of rigorous training underwater Aldrin was ready to prove that men could actually work comfortably in space. It was a critical exercise which would determine whether a moonwalking astronaut could survive the experience. After two scrubbed launches the final Gemini-Titan stack soared into low earth orbit and docked with its Agena target vehicle, placed aloft only an hour and a half earlier. Aldrin then spent over five hours working outside the spacecraft. His experience as a scuba diver gave him the edge needed to get the work done without exhausting himself as some of his predecessors had done. After 94½ hours in space Lovell and Aldrin splashed into the Pacific Ocean within three miles of the recovery ship. The stage was now set for the final push for the moon. Bonus: As early as 1961, engineer Jim Chamberlin had wanted to send Gemini to the moon. For the first time details of this audacious plan are revealed in a rare document from 1965. Features and Reviews: Paperback: 264 pages Publisher: Collector’s Guide Publishing Inc; Bk&CD-Rom edition (January 1, 2004) Language: English Book Dimensions: 10.1 x 6.9 x 0.6 inches Bonus CD-ROM Included!
