Space Travel Fiction
Space Travel Fiction

science fiction short story?
im in a science fiction class and i have to create a short story relating to one of the six themes
space travel
time travel
robots and A.I.
space aliens, or extraterrestrials
future people
or future worlds
and they can be mixed together a bit of course
the problem(s) is that i am not a sci fi buff or anything close
i got put in the class because i came into the semester late and this was the only opening they had
and because i came in late my grade is borderline pass/fail and this is the only class i need to graduate
i hate to ask, but any help on a basis for a story relating to one of the themes would be so greatly appreciated
i hate to ask for help on something like this, but ive been racking my brain for 2 weeks and i almost literally have nothin’
the paper is due in 6 days haha
really, ANY ideas would be awesome
thanks
The fact that you are “not a sci fi buff” is the root of the problem. It is obvious that creating a science fiction story is not something you want to do, but something that you have been forced into. Unfortunately, there is an agonizing truth in such a situation. To write anything well, an author must have an emotional need to tell the story. This is true for any type of writing. Finishing a story you simply do not care about is almost as easy as convincing a cat to whistle. I’m sure there is somebody out there who could do it, but why would you want to? The effort involved probably won’t justify the result.
So, how do you solve this dilemma? My best advice: Remember that for a story to be science fiction doesn’t mean that it has to be the literary equivalent of some esoteric theories and reality-defying gadgetry. Science fiction can be about anything, as long as it is not pure fantasy (and even then you’re OK if it is set in some part of the universe where the known laws no longer apply). What is commonly referred to as “soft science fiction” focuses on the human, emotional conflict where science is concerned. Isaac Asimov relates a good example when he asked (paraphrasing), “What if no one had ever seen a clock with a set of hands?” Phrases like, “The airplane entered the scene at two o’clock,” would be meaningless. That simple twist is the basis for a science fiction story.
So, look back over the seed scenarios you listed and ask yourself “What if . . . ?” questions. How would the world be different if SPACE TRAVEL had never existed? What if going to work involved TIME TRAVEL? (Would punching a time clock have the same meaning as it does today?) What if my next door neighbors were a family of ROBOTS AND A.I.s?
Find something — some conflict — in the ideas that you care about and write about that. And, if you can’t find anything in the list that speaks to you, write a story about why all the sci-fi scenarios are stupid.

The Space Shuttle: Celebrating Thirty Years of NASA’s First Space Plane [Hardcover] $39.95 The Space Shuttle: Celebrating Thirty Years of NASA’s First Space Plane [Hardcover] Author: Piers Bizony Bookviews by Alan Caruba”…a classic coffee table book, 10.5 x 11.25, 300 pages and filled with 900 color photos. In short, the perfect Christmas gift for someone who is an enthusiast for life and travel in outer space. In the 1980s, on assignment, I had the opportunity to visit the John F. Kennedy Space Center and tour the site where rockets and space shuttles were launched. I saw a shuttle up close and that is to say I saw a vehicle that was the size of a small building and marveled that it could be lifted beyond Earth?s gravity to circle the planet. One can only marvel at the courage of the crews that went aloft and the scientific and technological mastery that made it possible. This book is a keeper!” This superbly designed and lavishly illustrated book marks a special moment in history: the final mission of the space shuttle. Noted space and science author Piers Bizony has put together a retrospective that covers the entire space shuttle program. In addition to covering every space shuttle mission, the book also covers the development and design of the space shuttle, as well as the technical specifications of the vehicle and details of its major assemblies and subassemblies.
