Project Mercury Pocket Guide Project Mercury was about ?manned? space exploration. Both chimpanzees and Russian cosmonauts had been into orbit, but neither was saying much about what they?d seen there. It was America?s ?Mercury 7? astronauts who first experienced and described space travel for the free world. The Project Mercury Pocket Space Guide provides technical details coupled with a complete pictorial history of the Project Mercury space program in a compact and concise guide. Fascinating facts and color images have been extracted from official NASA documents.Presented chronologically in an easy-to-follow format, this is a book that both seasoned space buffs and aspiring amateurs will find an interesting and informative resource.

Apollo 10 Mission Patch

Apollo 10 Mission Patch

$4.95

4 inch patch. This spacecraft was the second Apollo mission to orbit the Moon, and the first to travel to the Moon with the full Apollo spacecraft, consisting of the Command and Service Module, named “Charlie Brown,” and the Lunar Module, named “Snoopy.” The primary objectives of the mission were to demonstrate crew, space vehicle and mission support facilities during a human lunar mission and to evaluate Lunar Module performance in cislunar and lunar environment. The mission was a full “dry run” for the Apollo 11 mission, in which all operations except the actual lunar landing were performed. On May 22, Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan entered the Lunar Module and fired the Service Module reaction control thrusters to separate the Lunar Module from the Command Module. The Lunar Module was put into an orbit to allow low-altitude passes over the lunar surface, the closest approach bringing it to within 8.9 kilometers (5.5 miles) of the Moon. All systems on the Lunar Module were tested during the separation including communications, propulsion, attitude control and radar. The Lunar Module and Command Module rendezvous and redocking occurred 8 hours after separation on May 23. Thirty-one lunar orbits were achieved. Upon approaching the moon, the spacecraft was oriented with the service propulsion engine facing in the direction of travel. Communication with Earth was temporarily interrupted as the spacecraft swung around the far side of the moon. On their own, the crew performed the complicated procedure which fired the engine for a little over 4 minutes thereby slowing the speed of the spacecraft just enough to place it into lunar orbit. This was a critical maneuver and everyone was more than just a little tense as the engine had never been tested in lunar orbit before this mission. Any malfunctions or deviation in burn time could have lead to disastrous consequences.. Jim Lovell later stated it was the longest four minutes he had ever spent. Everyone was relieved as the engine performed flawlessly and on Christmas Eve the crew of Bill Anders, Frank Borman and Jim Lovell became the first human beings in history to orbit another celestial body other than the planet earth. Hubble Space Telescope 1/48 Replica

$5995

The Hubble Space Telescope Model in 1/48 Scale. The Hubble Space Telescope is a telescope in orbit around the Earth, named after astronomer Edwin Hubble. Its position outside the Earth’s atmosphere provides significant advantages over ground-based telescopes ? images are not blurred by the atmosphere, there is no background from light scattered by the air, and the Hubble can observe ultra-violet light that is normally absorbed by the ozone layer in observations made from Earth. Since its launch in 1990, it has become one of the most important instruments in the history of astronomy. With it, astronomers have made many observations leading to breakthroughs in astrophysics. Hubble’s Ultra Deep Field is the most sensitive astronomical optical image ever taken. Features: Scale – 1/48 Length – 12.875″ Please allow 3 to 6 months from the time of order to delivery, as these models are custom made upon ordering. The Space Shuttle: Celebrating Thirty Years of NASA’s First Space Plane [Hardcover] Author: Piers Bizony Bookviews by Alan Caruba”…a classic coffee table book, 10.5 x 11.25, 300 pages and filled with 900 color photos. In short, the perfect Christmas gift for someone who is an enthusiast for life and travel in outer space. In the 1980s, on assignment, I had the opportunity to visit the John F. Kennedy Space Center and tour the site where rockets and space shuttles were launched. I saw a shuttle up close and that is to say I saw a vehicle that was the size of a small building and marveled that it could be lifted beyond Earth?s gravity to circle the planet. One can only marvel at the courage of the crews that went aloft and the scientific and technological mastery that made it possible. This book is a keeper!” This superbly designed and lavishly illustrated book marks a special moment in history: the final mission of the space shuttle. Noted space and science author Piers Bizony has put together a retrospective that covers the entire space shuttle program. In addition to covering every space shuttle mission, the book also covers the development and design of the space shuttle, as well as the technical specifications of the vehicle and details of its major assemblies and subassemblies. A full double-gatefold provides a large-scale technical drawing of the space shuttle. $29.95

10 Inch Space Shuttle ‘End of Program Patch’ 1981 – 2011 This patch commemorates the 30 year Space Shuttle Program. This design was the winning submission in a contest. The contest, which closed to submissions last December, was conceived by space shuttle program manager John Shannon and his technical assistant Debbie Byerly as an “uplifting” activity for workers as the program entered its final year. This winning design is by Blake Dumesnil, who chose a diamond-shape for his patch to suggest how the shuttle has been “an innovative, iconic gem in the history of American spaceflight,” its facets fanning out to “evoke the vastness of space and our aim to explore it, as the shuttle has done successfully for decades.”The central element of his design, the space shuttle itself, is bounded by panels depicting the American flag and two sets of stars: 14 in memory of the astronauts lost aboard Challenger and Columbia, and five symbolizing the shuttle fleet including Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour. The patch’s jewel-shape is cradled by the outline of a blue circle, symbolizing the orbiter’s realm in low Earth orbit but also alluding “to the smoothness of the shuttle orbiting the earth,” according to the caption Dumesnil provided for the contest. Fully Embroidered 10″ Patch
