Space Travel Robots
Space Travel Robots

Should we continue to send men into space?
As the shuttle program comes to an and this week, should we continue to send men and women into space or, build robots to do the work for us? Eventually, if we don't kill ourselves first, the Human race will leave the earth and venture into space. However, what does manned space travel do for us now that a robot cannot?
This is coming from a man that would shave his head and sell himself into slave labor to take a ride into space before my time is done...
Please describe what "men" can do in space that sophisticated, A.I. robots cannot.
It is a legitimate question.
Robotic missions are very successful. They risk fewer lives. They are more cost effective, especially since the robots don't need 'consumables' (food and water, which reduces the payload) often have less mass than human conterparts (reduces the payload), and don't need to be brought back (only need fuel for a one-way trip). Robotic missions also, obviously, are less risk to human life.
There are some things manned missions can still do better and more efficiently. It is a lot easier to 'explore' something you see if you are there, rather than waiting for a signal you send to a robot to explore something you find ;curious.'
The cost vs. returns debate is one that will no doubt be a part of space exploration for many decades to come.
Unless space tourism becomes prevalent and lucrative, those who support manned expeditions will have a difficult case to argue in the coming years. But they do have one thing on their side. Eventually, humanity *will* have to leave this planet to survive. That being said, a robot programmed to parent and teach children, carrying frozen human embryos to a hospitable destination cannot be ruled out either.

Roving MARS $36.95 "Visually Stunning" - Ann Hornaday, Washington Post Mars is Earth's closest planetary neighbor, and for decades scientists have been curious about the so-called "Red Planet," wondering if it's possible that life exists there, how its soil and terrain differs from our own, and if water can be found. While sending a manned space mission to Mars has been considered beyond the reach of America's space program, in 2001 the National Aeronautics and Space Administration approved a mission to send two "rovers" to Mars -- wheeled robots that would send images and data back to Earth. A two-year crash program resulted in two robotic rovers (dubbed "Spirit" and "Opportunity") being sent to Mars, which have given scientists and researchers on Earth a brand new vision of what the planet is really like. Roving Mars is a documentary which offers a detailed look at the people behind the Mars rover program, how the machines were built and what they can do, and what has been learned since they reached their target. Roving Mars was shot and originally exhibited in the high-definition IMAX film format. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide Features: Actors: Paul Newman, Stephen Squyres, Rob Manning (IV), Charles Elachi, Wayne Lee (II) Directors: George Butler (II) Format: AC-3, Closed-captioned, Color, Dolby, Dubbed, DVD-Video, Full Screen, Subtitled, Widescreen, NTSC Language: English Aspect Ratio: 1.78:1 Studio: Buena Vista Home Entertainment DVD Release Date: July 31, 2007 Run Time: 40 minutes Bonus Features: Bonus Movie: Mars and Beyond - Walt Disney's 1957 Investigation into the mysteries of the universe and space travel. 50 minutes.
